Ah the tween years... Someone warned you about the "terrible twos" but this tween thing.. Ugh. This is something much more complicated. The years when your child starts to transition from "kid" to "teen/young adult". It happens at different ages depending on several factors, but typically this transition takes place between the ages of 10-12. Here are a few things I learned to help ease this inevitable phase:

  • Make sure communication stays open. You will hear me mention this throughout my posts time and time again.

  • Don't rush your child to grow up. They are getting enough of that pressure from peers already. Some kids try to hang on to their childhood for longer, and there's nothing wrong with that.

  • Boundaries are more important now than ever. As their parent, you still have almost full control over their lifestyle at this stage.

  • You can also have control over which social media they have access to. Take advantage of parental controls on their phones.

  • Stay close. This is the age where a child wants to really start spreading their wings, which is not always a bad thing!

  • Don't stop the hugs, kisses or "I love yous". The tween years are where some kids start getting weird about this.

  • Dont forget that not all tweens are created equal. Tactics that you use on one tween may or may not work on another one.
